The mountains in the Olympic Peninsula of northwest Washington State, which describe a backwards "C" on the map in yellow and light orange, are quite young. This crescentic pattern took form in Tertiary time as the western margin of North America- much like its earlier Appalachian counterpart- grew through the accretion of several geologic terranes, bits and pieces of drifting oceanic crust that collided with and became joined to the continent. |
